Guided Bird Watching Tours to Bansang Quarry with Bird Tours Gambia
About 320 km east from Banjul along the South Bank Road is Bansang Quarry, THE place
to see a breeding colony of Red-throated Bee-eaters in the Gambia. Too few of the
larger tour companies make the effort to travel this far east, but we at Bird Tours
Gambia arrange Guided Birding Tours to Bansang Quarry, and it is well worth a visit.
Ebou Barry, our Bird Guide, will help to make Birding trip an experience not to forget.
The Red-throated Bee-eaters are under the protection of West African Bird Study Association,
(WABSA). Parts of Bansang Quarry have been fenced off in an effort to protect the
birds. The funding for the fencing and a shelter was raised by Gambia Birding Group
UK, whilst the signs are sponsored by Birdwatchers. A local youth group staff the
area, and all entry fees go directly to the local community.
A pool in the quarry attracts such species as Exclamatory Paradise Whydah, Cut-throat
Finch, Red-billed Quelea, Pin-tailed Whydah, Cinnamon-breasted Bunting, Ortolan Bunting,
Bush Petronia, Western Little Sparrowhawk, Yellow-fronted Canaries, Black-rumped
Waxbills, Grey-headed Sparrows and White-backed Vulture.
Among the other birds that can be seen in Bansang Quarry are Dark-chanting Goshawk,
Shikra, Mottled Spinetail, Eqyptian Plover, Bustards and Little Swifts.
